What prompted you to begin making masks for healthcare
workers? 

With the onset of Covid 19 here in the states, I wanted to help as much as I could. I was truly shocked to learn how much of a PPE shortage we had and with my former work life in manufacturing, I knew it would take months for domestic production to ramp up and fill the demand. 
In my home, I have the machines, the fabric and ability to make masks, so I felt the calling and had to act. 

You have a big social media following. How many people are using your designs/patterns to help healthcare workers?


It’s always hard to know how many people actually use the patterns but I’ve been tagged and messaged when other sewists do. It’s truly heart-warming to know I’m helping others empower themselves to see right now. I make a point to answer all the mask and related PPE questions and I get so we can get as many masks out there as possible. 

How long does it take you to make 1 mask? 

I batch sew as much as possible (making several at a time for productivity)...but if I had to estimate the time for a single mask with ties, it would be 20 since I would have to make the ties as well. For a mask with elastic, it would probably take 15 min. 

You mentioned a group that your involved in here and now your making healthcare gowns. Tell me about the group!

I teach classes occasionally at Sew to Speak in Worthington and Anita Gastaldo, the owner, asked me if I would help the reusable gowns primarily for EMS works. She is working with an incredible grass roots team with Ohio Saves A Hero which is raising money to masks, shields and gowns. All of the money goes to the PPE supplies and depends on hundreds of volunteers to sew, assemble, and deliver all over our great state. How can the community help you in your efforts? Do you need more fabric, supplies, donations?

If anyone would like to help, please support Ohio Saves a Hero first.  I’m taking donations through venmo @cristy-stuhldreher and PayPal cristy@iloveyousew.com to help with supplies and shipping.  I send other supplies to hard hit areas too. For example, I know a police officer in Chicago who doesn’t have aerosol disinfectant for his gear and it’s hard to find in the city. When I’m out running errands, I try to find what I can and send it over.

Meet Jayme from Scout & Molly's Boutique! April 2, 2019 10:27

Advice on Success: Work hard, show up early, find inspiration in everything and READ. I always recommend finding one article a day that can teach you something new about your field!

What's in my bag:
My phone - I'm constantly working from my phone. I try and take mental breaks away from it & will put it on airplane mode when I can but Social Media is a HUGE part of my job and a great way to connect with my customers. 
Candy - Right now I'm obsessed with the vegan chocolates from Raaka. They have pink sea salt, bourbon and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sunglasses - I like to give my eyelashes breaks in-between mascara days. (it may be an old wives tale but I'm convinced it helps them stay healthy). Either way - sunglasses are like camouflage for no-makeup days.
Perfume - For spring I love Kai's oil based, roll-on perfume. It's super light and smells like fresh gardenias.
Tide to Go - Because having a new puppy can be a little messy and muddy paw prints aren't fashionable, yet.
Earrings - I LOVE my new Honey Rose & K Cowrie Shell earrings. They're my favorite new piece for spring!

If you know Suzanne Miller you know she's like a graceful gift wrapped in a perfect bow. Warm, smart, classy and full of Southern charm! We sat down with Suzanne to find out some of her favorite places and see what's in her Louis! Fun fact, Suzanne has TWO sets of twins! 

Occupation: Currently I'm a stay at home mama to my favorite little people! Prior to that, I worked at Honda for 15 years where I was both a seat and seatbelt product development engineer and a senior safety test engineer. 

My Family: My handsome hubby Joe, 8 year old twins Andy and Ben, 6 year old twins Charlie and Evie, and our sweet, lively 1 year old Bernedoodle Daisy Mae.

Favorite Quote: I have two!! These days, both of these ring true for me.

Beach or Mountains: Both! I grew up on Paris Mountain (in the Blue Ridge Mountains) in Virginia, but also love our annual beach trip to Kiawah, South Carolina. I consider both my happy places!

Favorite Meal: If I'm cooking, chicken n' dumplings it is! Or anything in my InstaPot which is my current obsession. If I'm getting takeout, I crave Aab India's Saag paneer. If we're going out, Lindey's, Watershed Kitchen and Spagio are a few of our favorite spots! Can you tell I like to eat?! ;) 

Pet Peeve: Mean people. Didn't their mama ever teach them to treat others like they'd like to be treated?! I don't get it. Life is short and hard enough without any unnecessary drama! 

My Escape: My backyard on a hot summer night. Right before we had Andy and Ben, we revamped our backyard with an outdoor entertaining area and new garage. My favorite thing to do after we put the kids to bed is to curl up on our outdoor couch and watch a movie under the stars! 

Favorite Hidden Spot in Town: If I'm with our crew, I love to take a stroll down to Tarpy Woods at the end of our street.  Our kids love to build forts there still with all the sticks and rocks they can hold! I love it when they are outside getting dirt under their fingernails. And I just enjoy the peace and quiet while they are busy!  If I have an afternoon free, you can likely find me at any of the local antique shops around town, especially Grandview Mercantile which is my current favorite. I love hunting for my next treasure! 

Advice on Success: I don't know if I'm the best person to comment on this, but I'll give it a go. I think my definition of success has changed as I've gotten more "mature." Early in my career, I was focused on deadlines, making $$, and climbing the corporate ladder. Since I've stepped back in my career (and still haven't given up hope on a 2nd act as the kids get a little older!), I consider "success" as having an awesome partner in life, healthy and happy kiddos who love their mama, and a tribe of girlfriends who'll listen without judging and whom I can count on always. I feel very fortunate to be so successful! 
In my bag: 

First of all, this bag was a big purchase for me! I wanted to get it right, so when we were in Las Vegas for my best friend's wedding, I dragged Joe to all 7 Louis Vuittons on the strip to make sure we found the perfect one! ;) Thankfully he was a good sport about it.  So, if we're being totally honest, once I cleaned out the cheerios and fruit snack wrappers, these were a few of my must-have items that I always carry! I've been reading Reese Witherspoon's new book Whiskey in a Teacup so I definitely have that with me to read in the car while I'm waiting for the kids after swim or basketball practice. I also always carry Caldalie Beauty Elixir (it smells divine and just feels fancy) for when I need a pick-me-up. I also like the Pure Haven Boo-book stick since it seems like somebody is always getting hurt! Naked and Thrive Rejuventating oil is awesome and keep my skin soft during these cold Ohio winter months. A few of my favorite Honey Rose & K pieces that I always seem to go to are the Tortoise shell hoops (love the shape of these) and button studs (a good way to step up any outfit!). I usually always have some sort of snack - love the pre-packaged Costco nuts. Because I turned 40 last year and these wrinkles just aren't going away, I try to take collagen whenever I can.  These HUM Pop tabs are fantastic.  And the last three things I always have with me, esp. in the winter, are a tin of Rosebud salve, Sugar lip treatment and Skin Perfect lip gloss. I might have a slight chapstick obsession.

Favorite Meal: Caprese or buratta salad with a blue moon to drink followed by an iced sugar cookie or a piece of cake with butter cream frosting.

Pet Peeve: Messes of any kind. I’m a neat freak, can’t even sleep if I know the floors haven’t been swept and counters cleaned etc! 

My Escape: A tea house whether its local or over seas I love a good pot of tea!

Advice on Success:
I will never feel I’ve achieved success so that’s a tough question.  I am always looking to gain more knowledge and skill to be better for those I serve.  I just love what I do and I hope to always be a light in someone’s day. The only business principle I have is to be sure and tell People whether it’s a client, my family or the barista who makes my Starbucks drink to start my day off on the right foot,  how wonderful they are and the individual ways that they are special because people need to hear how amazing they are! 
What's In Laura's Bag?!

I’m a minimalist when it comes to my purse and I carry a Bandolier everyday bc it’s easy to access the things I need and prevents my phone from breaking on job sites etc. I keep my Listerine cool strips, my MAC impassioned amplified lipstick, a pair of my favorite Honey Rose & K  earrings to put on before I walk into a meeting, my target card and a love ornament my daughter made me.

Pet Peeve: I’m reaching the age where you should probably just ask me what DOESN'T annoy me. But if I had to choose one thing, then whistlers. Which is problematic because I’m married to one. 

My Escape: My kitchen, My garden, or anyplace with a spa. In a jam: noise cancelling headphones and a glass of wine. 

Favorite Hidden Spot in Town: Victor’s Taco Shop in Delaware by Ohio Wesleyan University. It’s a drive, has no place to sit and eat, and is in a building that at one point was likely a Taco Bell. But it’s so worth it. Ain’t no problem a Victor’s carne asada burrito can’t solve. 

Advice on Success: My daughter’s elementary school motto is “Work hard, be kind.” If only more adults realized that’s all it takes.

Favorite Quote: "Shoot for the Moon.  Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."  When I was a teacher I had a poster with these words hanging in my classroom & both of my children have this saying on wall decor in their rooms.  It's so important for everyone to remember that success is still possible even when you may not feel like it is.

Beach or Mountains: No brainer.  BEACH all the way!  I love the water, sun and ocean smell.

Favorite Meal: Pizza!  I haven't met a pizza I don't love....NY style, Chicago style, flatbread, gourmet, chain pizza, etc!  

Pet Peeve: When people know a lane is going to end or is closed up ahead and yet they still zoom past and hope to cut over further up!  Please wait your turn like the rest of us. 

My Escape: Books.  I've always loved to read and in my adult years have found it a great way to escape from reality for a bit.  Nothing shuts my brain off like an engaging plot, interesting characters or descriptive passages that transport me to another place or time. 

Favorite Hidden Spot in Town: The bar at the original Hyde Park in Upper Arlington.  My husband and I have had some of our best date nights here.  We sit at the bar, order a delicious dinner, have a glass of wine and enjoy conversation with each other and those around us. There's just something about it. 

Advice on Success: What is truly the definition of success?  I'm not sure there really is one.  Instead, I think it's important to feel confident & fulfilled (at least most of the time) in what you're doing and being a humble, honest & kind person while doing so. 
In My Bag:
-Bag: Kate Spade Cross-body; my go-to versatile bag which I have in two the two-tone color shown here and in a coral color
-Kindle: As mentioned above, I love to read.  My Kindle is always with me in case I have a spare minute or two while waiting on a kid to finish a practice/dance class.
-Checkbook: Yes, I'm that girl who still balances a checkbook in 2019!
-Keys: Gotta get from point A to point B.
-Blue Lagoon Rejuvenating Lip Balm: My sister-in-law brought this back from Iceland for me and it's my absolute favorite.  Moisturizing with a little gloss to it!
-Hand sanitizer, wipes & Aquaphor: Well, because kids!
-Business card holder & business cards: My business partner gave me this trendy card holder that I keep on me because you'd be amazed at the places where my work in the travel industry comes up in conversation...the baseball field, airplanes, the kids' school to name a few.  
And finally, my favorite Honey Rose & K piece...the Star Gazer earrings!  These are so light and fun to wear.

What's In Dr. Prasad's Bag?! February 19, 2019 17:04

We caught up with one of our favorite customers, Dr. Mona Prasad. We think Mona is spectacular and read on to see why...

Occupation:
Physician, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Addiction Medicine, OhioHealth, Columbus, Ohio

My Family: Husband and best life partner since 2004: Matt Nawrocki, Daughters: Nora (11) and Neve (9), Black Lab: Magic (4)

Favorite Quote: "What the mind does not know, the eyes will not see." I heard this first from my Dad when complaining about studying for exams in medical school, but I bet he adapted it from somewhere.

Beach or Mountains: Depends on the season. Definitely up for a winter ski trip and all the memories that can be made at apres ski for all ages. But, vacation usually means beach to me...Longboat Key is our go-to destination.

Favorite Meal:  Any lunch that can be enjoyed with a glass of wine....I rarely ever drink during the day, so when I am relaxed without obligation at the noon hour, wow, it just feels like #winning.

Pet Peeve: Not finishing what you started.

My Escape:  Theater...I mean, we just moved planes, trains and automobiles to see Hamilton, and I  would do it 10 times over to  embrace that kind of artistry.

Favorite Hidden Spot in Town: No Soliciting Bar. I became a member to have a place to host my posse...But that Pho Place on Lane Ave in the old Taco Bell is a dream as well.

Advice on Success: Wow! I think I still feel like,"Who am I to comment on success?", but maybe that is the point.  Showing up, doing what you say you are going to do, leading with a servant heart...I would attribute my success to that, and maybe it is just that simple.
In my bag: First of all, this Fendi was my most guilty pleasure purchase ever, but the strap I found on consignment (TheRealReal) was a huge win! I always carry this old/cute picture of the girls, my iPhone complete with Michigan Popsocket (Go Blue!!), Aveda Nourish-Mint in spiced plum, the keys to my VW convertible bug so I can drive with the top down whenever it approaches 50 degrees, I have been a disciple of the Full Focus Planner since Christmas and totally recommend to help keep life/work in order as well as to have ongoing journaling, and I have been reading Brene Brown works for the past few months as well. Good stuff!!  My FAV Honey Rose & K pieces are tough to nail down...so I added the ones I reach for the most! Star Gazers (duh, best earrings ever) and my handmade piece highlighting an old charm I had with my girls names on them, spruced up on rosary chain and some "extra" to make it almost my look on the daily.

Favorite Quote: "To whom much is given, much is required" (Luke 12:48)  I had a special enrichment teacher who gave me a special note including this quote when I was ending 6th grade and I have thought of it most days since.  I feel so blessed with the life I've been given and therefore want to make sure I'm doing my best to be a good person, a good mom, and good wife, a good friend, and a good world community member by serving those in need.
Beach or Mountains: Both!
Favorite Meal: Always changing!  I LOVE trying new things!  Tasting menus with drink pairings introducing me to something new is my fav.
Pet Peeve: People making loud noise while eating...  I definitely have misophonia!
My Escape: The water....  on a beach, on a boat, water skiing, paddle boarding, whatever...
Favorite Hidden Spot in Town: The Scioto River...  I think most people are surprised when I tell them you can ski/paddle board on it and it is really so beautiful during all seasons.  Especially when you can get to some pretty cool areas that have a ton of wildlife/birds and less homes!
Advice on Success: Be open-minded and willing to learn and evolve.  Be honest, humble, resilient, and optimistic! (LOVE THIS ADVICE!)

The shell jewelry trend is here to stay for 2019 and we're about taking it up a notch. Whether dipped in gold or mixed with vintage materials, brass or hand painted cowries, these styles read much less beach and much more chic.

Caring for your fashion jewelry is just as important as feeling amazing when wearing your jewelry! A few pointers that will keep your jewelry fabulous for the long run. 

Keep your jewelry away from

  • water
  • dishwashing soap
  • lotion
  • perfume
  • silver cleaner
  • other harsh chemicals

Did you know your jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off? YES, YES!

Store your jewelry properly

KEEP YOUR JEWELRY TARNISH FREE BY KEEPING YOUR JEWELRY DRY

  • Don't Wash Dishes or do Laundry With Your Jewelry on. Many cleaning products that come in contact with your beautiful jewelry that can take off the finish. Why? Because of the harsh chemicals.
  • Don't Wear Jewelry In Pool or at the Spa. Chlorinated water can react with the metals found in jewelry causing your awesome earrings or necklace to change color.
  • Don't Use Jewelry Cleaner. Cleaner made for silver, gold, or platinum is way too harsh for fashion jewelry which is usually gold plated with these precious metals.
  • Don't Put on Lotion or Perfume with your Jewelry on. For the same reasons we listed above, lotions and perfumes that are not 100% natural can react with your jewelry.

 

LAST ON, FIRST OFF

    • Put Your Jewelry on After You Put Your Clothes on and Before Your Take Your Clothes Off. Doing this will ensure that your clothing doesn't get caught on your sweater or t-shirt during the clothing removal process. An accidental pull of your necklace while taking off your shirt can cause a chain or jump ring to break!
    • Remove Your Jewelry During Activities. When performing mundane and fun tasks, such as laundry, cooking, or gardening, remove your jewelry to prevent physical damage or exposure to cleaning chemicals or cleaning fluids. We also recommend taking off necklaces when holding small children or playing with them. Sounds silly but you wouldn't believe how many babies and toddler will yank/break and pull your necklace right off. 

 

STORE YOUR FASHION JEWELRY PROPERLY TO KEEP IT LOOKING GREAT FOR YEARS!

    • Keep Your Jewelry Secure. Store your jewelry in a jewelry box or other secure container that will prevent your baubles from moving around. You can also store your jewelry in a silk or velvet pouch and put each pouch in a decorative shoe box.
    • Avoid Air! The air around us is what makes metal tarnish. We recommend using a ziploc or sandwich bag with the air squeezed out to prevent oxidization.

We are thrilled to feature one of our favorite fashion bloggers, Candace Read.  She's always on point, has great taste (refined, practical and pulls off a finished look), gorgeous (inside and out), and fun.  Her style is relatable, completely in touch with living life, wearing comfortable clothes and looking good while doing it.

I met Candace over a smoothie bowl at Zest at Easton Town Center. We chatted about her role at Wardrobe Therapy. She helps clients with personal shopping, wardrobe consulting, and closet restyling services. She brings her regular working girl style to her clients, and to readers of her blog. When not working or blogging, she's exploring Columbus with her husband.

Her bag reflects her life as a personal stylist, always on the go. Her items are functional and fun.

Candace typically carries a backpack or a satchel bag with a crossbody strap. Her  soft leather backpack shown is from GiGi New York.

She's a huge fan of Neutrogena's lip color stick. She also carries Pacifica underarm wipes. 

Her personalized field notes were a gift from A&F Challenge, a party hosted by Abercrombie and Fitch, benefitting a different non-profit each year. 

A fabric tape measurer, Tide to-go stick, iPhone and changer, cash (for meters), pins and business cards are essential to her work as a personal stylist.

She wears her Honey Rose & K vintage Italian compass pendant. Its symbolic to her since she just did a rebranding of her blog from "Live Love & Read" to "Candace Read". She's changing her direction to reflect a "more mature, refined and a million times more confident in who I am {perks of getting older}".

Celebrating National Donut Day! June 1, 2018 07:30

Paula Koontz-Gilmour is one of Central Ohio's premier realtors, holding awards from both Coldwell Banker King Thompson, Columbus Board of Realtors, and Ohio Association of Realtors.

Paula is from Upper Arlington and lives here with her husband and 2 children. She's not only an accomplished realtor, but she also is involved with many non-profit organizations in Central Ohio. You'll likely see Paula working, exercising (barre class, tennis or running), volunteering or shuttling her kids to and from activities.

Egyptians: Best Jewelry Creators Of All Time May 28, 2018 22:02

I just got back from an amazing weekend in NYC with my husband and oldest daughter. We took in the sights, ate everything in sight, and tracked over 20K/day on the Apple activity tracker. It was an action packed three days of fun.

On a rainy morning, we decided to tour a few exhibits at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met is one of the most fantastic places to visit in NYC, or arguably, the country. Not only is the architecture of the building amazing, but it houses some of the best works of art. We only spend a few hours, only enough to scratch the surface

In my opinion, the Egyptian exhibit was by far the most interesting collection. It was a comprehensive collection of tombs, many with hieroglyphics still visible. Many statues of stone were still preserved, just as they would have appeared 4,000 years ago. Without question, Egyptians were ahead of their time in math, architecture and preservation.


The Temple of Dendur

A large part of the collection was jewelry discovered in tombs. As you can see, the detail is outstanding and truly works of art. I found that much of the jewelry could be worn today, and still look fashionable.

Pool Bling: How to Accessorize Pool Side May 22, 2018 09:10

All winter long, I'm thinking of summer. While I don't enjoy being in the sun, I love laying under an umbrella, while the sun is shining.

Cover ups, new slide sandals, a new suit (or 3), and I'm shopping mid-February for pool days in June. Why? They're outfits! Why not accessorize them!!!

For the easy, sporty, suit and coverup, our simple pieces will work well. We love our vintage studs with a cotton coverup.

If you follow Columbus bloggers, you are more than likely following Reagan Mamer's blog, Bray's Way. We love her lifestyle blog, full of home decor inspirations (and they're affordable!), wedding planning (the lace dress she chose!), and her favorite eateries. She's one of the nicest people I've met, and truly embodies the mid-western woman: down to earth and charming.

Reagan's home is as cozy as her personality. Just wrapping up a home renovation, the kitchen is amazing and her floral bathroom is swoon-worthy. Her bichon poodle mix, Leo, captured our hearts. Look at this sweet face!!!

We all have that one go to dress in our closet. It takes you from work to date night to girls night to kids choir concert to grocery shopping. It is tried and true.

I thought it was time to get personal and introduce you to everyone who is behind the scenes at Honey Rose & K Jewelry. They say it takes a village right? Well I don't have a village but I do have some pretty great women who help make the brand sparkle! 
I'll start with a little about myself and my interview with Executive Elements, Woman of the Week.

My Name:
Meredith Piccin

My Current Job/Company:
Owner/Designer Honey Rose & K Jewelry

My Work:
I’m the owner and designer of Honey Rose & K jewelry. Eco-chic jewelry and accessories for the modern bohemian. My pieces are handmade in my Upper Arlington studio using vintage finds mixed with modern elements and design.

My Passion:
My family, an Eco-chic lifestyle, design.

My Family:
Joe (Supportive Husband), Charlie (Imaginative Son- 12), Felice (Creative Daughter – 6)

My Hero or Heroes:
My parents. My Mom is such a calming soul and the BEST listener. My Dad is a jack of all trades and full of passion.

My Escape:
Time with my girlfriends to unwind and family vacations.

My Pet Peeve:
