Difference Makers! Meet Cristy of Love You Sew May 27, 2020 20:57

We believe anyone can make a difference in any community. Meet Cristy Stuhldreher from Love You Sew and follow her journey on Instagram @loveyousew_

What prompted you to begin making masks for healthcare
workers?

With the onset of Covid 19 here in the states, I wanted to help as much as I could. I was truly shocked to learn how much of a PPE shortage we had and with my former work life in manufacturing, I knew it would take months for domestic production to ramp up and fill the demand.
In my home, I have the machines, the fabric and ability to make masks, so I felt the calling and had to act.

You have a big social media following. How many people are using your designs/patterns to help healthcare workers?

It’s always hard to know how many people actually use the patterns but I’ve been tagged and messaged when other sewists do. It’s truly heart-warming to know I’m helping others empower themselves to see right now. I make a point to answer all the mask and related PPE questions and I get so we can get as many masks out there as possible.

How long does it take you to make 1 mask?

I batch sew as much as possible (making several at a time for productivity)...but if I had to estimate the time for a single mask with ties, it would be 20 since I would have to make the ties as well. For a mask with elastic, it would probably take 15 min.

You mentioned a group that your involved in here and now your making healthcare gowns. Tell me about the group!

I teach classes occasionally at Sew to Speak in Worthington and Anita Gastaldo, the owner, asked me if I would help the reusable gowns primarily for EMS works. She is working with an incredible grass roots team with Ohio Saves A Hero which is raising money to masks, shields and gowns. All of the money goes to the PPE supplies and depends on hundreds of volunteers to sew, assemble, and deliver all over our great state. If you would like to contribute or learn more, you can visit their GoFund me page here:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/ohiosaveahero?utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet

How can the community help you in your efforts? Do you need more fabric, supplies, donations?

If anyone would like to help, please support Ohio Saves a Hero first.  I’m taking donations through venmo @cristy-stuhldreher and PayPal cristy@iloveyousew.com to help with supplies and shipping.  I send other supplies to hard hit areas too. For example, I know a police officer in Chicago who doesn’t have aerosol disinfectant for his gear and it’s hard to find in the city. When I’m out running errands, I try to find what I can and send it over.
