April is Earth month!
Forty-two years ago Earth Day was established to create awareness and appreciation for the planet. Every April 22 we celebrate around the world with billions of participants from schools to governments. Why? It's more important than ever to discuss how we can protect Earth and what our leaders will continue to do to tackle the major issues we face.
How do we make Earth Day every day? How do you pledge to do better? We all need to stand united for a more sustainable future and demand change. At Honey Rose & K we believe in recycling materials that already exist while making them fashion-forward and unique.
How can the fashion industry become more sustainable? Second to oil, fashion and textiles is the most polluting industry in the world. It can take 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton which equals a single t-shirt and pair of jeans. What becomes of the clothing that doesn't sell, falls apart or goes out of style...it is discarded in giant landfills. Ouch!
Designers can cut out toxic chemicals and choose materials carefully. People can force fashion's biggest brands to publicly disclose their pollution. It starts with caring and education.
The truth is, there are loads of smaller brands that are more sustainable but you may not hear about them. Follow the magazines and blogs that promote sustainable fashion and design until sustainability becomes the trend itself. I believe we can make sustainable style the norm by considering every purchase we make carefully.
